The Quotable Caine:
Caine: "It's called Locard's Exchange Principle."
Hollings: "I don't get it."
Caine: "That's okay. We do."

Hollings: "How come I've never heard of this on TV?"
Caine: "Because guns make the news. Science doesn't."

Episode Recap: The season 8 premiere picks up where we last left off: Delko is missing in the Everglades after helping his father flee the scene of the shootout, and the team is searching diligently to find him in the hopes that he is still alive. He is located on the side of the road (note the location he is discovered, for it will come into play in the flashback), unconscious and badly injured. After being transported to the hospital and handed over to Dr. Alexx Woods, his struggle to live begins. The episode switches back and forth between present day and the year 1997, showing both the progress with the team as they deal with Delko's uncertain fate, as well as the flashback story of how the team first formed, in which the newest character, Jesse Cardoza is introduced. Horatio is a detective, working with his partner, Sully, to solve a murder investigation after they receive a call-in about a body dump (discovered and reported by then-tow truck driver Eric Delko). Eric tags along for part of the investigation after Horatio tells him to "watch and learn", noting that Eric has a great eye for detail and ends up suggesting to Eric that he enroll at the police academy, get his badge, and then come find Horatio. We are also finally let in on the origin of the world-famous "Shades of Justice" and get to see the scene in which Horatio first gets his sunglasses, a pair that Eric has salvaged for him (there are earlier snippets of conversation in which Eric asks Horatio why he has not yet invested in a pair of sunglasses, representative of the fact that Horatio has most likely just moved to Miami from New York and is not used to the Miami sunshine).

The episode ends with the formation of the team we know and love today: Calleigh has already begun working for MDPD, Horatio is asked to head up the special investigations unit (renamed CSI), Delko is recruited to attend the police academy so that he can join the team, Tripp is working patrol (with a rather humorous porn-style mustache) and Speedle is mentioned by Cardoza at the end as being a prime candidate for Horatio's CSI unit. We also see Boa Vista at one point, working for the FBI. Ryan is never mentioned or seen in the flashback.

Body count: 1- Amy Bowers

The Crimes:

Victim(s): Amy Bowers

Suspect(s): Steve Bowers (the victim's husband), Arnold Hollings (the gardener)

Whodunit: Arnold Hollings

Path of evidence:

From the field:
  • submerged BMW with victim's body in the trunk, double-lividity bruising, muddy footprints in victim's home, blood spatter on window in victim's home inconsistent with directionality of gunshot, result of air conditioner blowing blood droplets in the direction of the window (is it sad that I know this vocabulary by heart?), blood behind baseboard panels and inside electric sockets, as discovered by Jesse Cardoza.

From the morgue:
  • evidence of postmortem sexual assault, bullet from victim's body.

From the lab:
  • nitrate residue on Hollings' shirt, placing him in the car where the victim was found, blood in Hollings' nose.

Personnel issues: FLASHBACK- Horatio and his partner Sully are clashing over how to handle the murder investigation, Calleigh is dealing with the flack she receives from co-workers for her gender as well as unfavorable treatment by Lieutenant Fred Dorsey, and Jesse stands up for her against the other guys in the department. PRESENT DAY- Calleigh worries about Eric's survival, Horatio has to deal with the possibility of losing yet another person he loves (after Ray, Marisol and Speedle, who is mentioned at the end of the epi. but is never shown), Alexx has to break the news to Calleigh that Eric may not be alright, and of course, the rest of the team are all anxious as to the outcome of Delko's surgery.

Guest stars: Khandi Alexander (Alexx Woods), Michelle Hurd (Agt. Diane Reed), Brad Leland (Det. John "Sully" Sullivan), Harold Sylvester (Lt. Fred Dorsey), Jason George (Steve Bowers), Brad William Henke (Arnold Hollings).

I realise this is old news to you people in the US but we (in the UK) were only treated to it last night. Need to say a couple of things: what a treat to see H's dark blue eyes open for once. Shows he can do it! Oh, and the scene with H at Eric's bedside, about 'letting go' and he's thought of it himself. Goosebumps all over. Not keen on the make-up but accept it's going to be hard for David to appear in his 30s. Off to rewatch a few bits... may never recover. What's the rest of Season 8 like?

Ryan was'nt at the CSI team from the beginning. So I don't think, that he will be in the flashback. But I don't know. I'll have to wait for 2010 to see this episode. And it's driving me crazy.
