At a crime scene in a downtown Miami parking structure; Two shooting victims- one in critical condition headed to Dade General, the other DOA and on the way to the morgue; Eric and Calleigh processing the scene:
Eric: Hey, Calleigh. (walking over to her; she is pulling rounds out of a column about 10 feet from where the DB was) What’d you find?
Calleigh: (pulling out the fourth bullet) Well, I have two rounds from a 9-mil, and two from a .45. That’s not counting the three extra 9-mil casings.
Eric: We’ve got two shooters?
Calleigh: That’s what it looks like. I won’t know which one killed our John Doe until I get the bullets from Alexx.
Eric: Okay. I’ve got a couple of footprints where our other vic was found. It looks like there was a scuffle before the bullets started flying. (quietly as he leans closer) So, can we do dinner at your place tonight?
Calleigh: (smiling as she bags and tags the rounds) I think so. (looks up at him) Anything in particular?
Eric: (grinning) No…(grins mischievously) As long as you’re there.
Calleigh: (blushes slightly and looks away, then looks at him again with an impish grin) You got it.
Eric: (grins, then picks up her kit as she strips off her gloves) Let’s get back to the lab.
Outside of the lab; Eric and Calleigh returning from the crime scene:
Eric: Calleigh, watch out. (grabs her from behind at the hips as the girl coming out stops just inside the door)
Calleigh: (smiles at him over her shoulder) Thanks, Eric. (looking at who she almost walked into for the first time) Kenzie? Is that you? (puts down her kit to hug Mackenzie)
Mackenzie: (smiling as she hugs Calleigh) Hey! They said you were out at a crime scene!
Calleigh: When did you get here? What are you doing here? And why are you here? (rapid-fire questioning)
Mackenzie: (laughs) Um, I got here this morning , I transferred to Dade University and do you mean here, Miami here, or here, crime lab here? And aren’t you gonna introduce me? (gesturing to a confused Eric)
Calleigh: (turns to Eric) Oh gosh, Eric. I’m sorry.
Eric: (smiles) That’s okay. So, are you gonna introduce us?
Calleigh: Oh. Right. (pause) Kenzie, this is Eric Delko. Eric, this is my cousin Mackenzie Davis.
Mackenzie/Eric: Hi. Nice to meet you. (shake hands)
Calleigh: (to Mackenzie) So, why are you here at the lab?
Mackenzie: I got the lab internship through Dade University and I came in to get my ID and security clearance.
Calleigh: Congratulations!
Eric: Great job! (to Calleigh) Cal, I’m gonna start processing some of this evidence. (picks up Calleigh’s kit)
Mackenzie: Oh, don’t let me hold you up. You guys have work to do. I’ll talk to you later.
Eric: (stopping her) No, it’s fine. Really. (starts to walk inside; Calleigh follows, but he stops) Go. I’ll take care of it.
Calleigh: We’re still on for dinner tonight, right? (quietly)
Eric: Definitely. (turns back to Mackenzie as the idea hits him) Mackenzie, why don’t you join us for dinner?
Mackenzie: Oh, I couldn’t. I don’t wanna intrude on your plans.
Eric: (looks at Calleigh, who nods) You’re not. We insist.
Mackenzie: But…
Calleigh: Don’t argue, Kenzie. You know you won’t win.
Mackenzie: (reluctantly) Okay. Dinner would be nice.
Eric: Good. I’ll see you later. (to Calleigh) I’ll meet you inside. (goes inside)
Calleigh: So, meet me here at 5:30? My shift ends at 5.
Mackenzie: (hesitantly) Are you sure? (Calleigh gives her a look) Okay, okay. You want me to pick up anything?
Calleigh: No, thanks. I’ve got everything at home. Where are you headed?
Mackenzie: Back to the temp dorms. I don’t start classes until tomorrow.
Calleigh: (stares at Mackenzie) Why are you in the temp dorms?
Mackenzie: (looking a little guilty) My transfer was a little sudden and the dorms are full.
Calleigh: Why didn’t you say something? You can stay with me. (sees Mackenzie start to argue) At least for tonight. I have an extra bedroom that’s always open. You know that.
Mackenzie: But…
Calleigh: Don’t argue. (gives Mackenzie a stern look)
Mackenzie: Okay. I’ll stay tonight. (looks at the building) You better go. (smiling slyly) I think Eric’s waiting for you.
Calleigh: (shocked) What’s that supposed to mean?
Mackenzie: (innocently) Oh, nothing. (laughs at Calleigh’s expression)
Calleigh: (composing herself) Haha. (takes Mackenzie’s hand) I’m glad you’re here. See ya later. (goes into the lab)
In the morgue, Alexx is finishing with the autopsy of John Doe; Calleigh walks in:
Calleigh: Hey, Alexx. You got anything for me?
Alexx: (giving Calleigh a container with two bullets in it) I think you want these.
Calleigh: (looking at the rounds) These look like 9-mils.
Alexx: You were expecting something else? (confused)
Calleigh: No. We found two 9-mil rounds and two .45s at the scene, with 3 other 9-mil casings.
Alexx: Well, baby, those are the only bullets I found in this guy. Maybe your other vic…?
Calleigh: (contemplative) Yeah…thanks, Alexx.
Alexx: No problem, honey.
End of shift, in the parking lot:
Mackenzie: (sees Eric heading to a Hummer parked two stalls away) Where’s Eric goin’?
Calleigh: (getting into the Hummer) He wanted to pick something up; then he’ll be over. (watching Eric drive away)
Mackenzie: Oh. (gets in the Hummer; Calleigh drives for a bit, causing her laugh) I see you still drive like a mad woman on a wild stallion!
Calleigh: (smiles) Yeah.
Mackenzie: So, what’s the deal with you and Eric? (a little too brightly; causing Calleigh to stare)
Calleigh: (trying to play it cool) What are you talkin’ about?
Mackenzie: (laughs) C’mon, Cals. I see the way you look at each other. And the way he grabbed you earlier. (pause) So spill!
Calleigh: (hesitantly; then bowing to the pressure) Okay! We work together, so we shouldn’t be dating.
Mackenzie: (grinning) But you are.
Calleigh: (stops in front of her house) Yeah…in secret. There’s department policy…
Mackenzie: (disgusted) Well, that’s dumb! (considering) But I guess it’s understandable, in case things don’t work out, they don’t want any fallout. (looking at Calleigh) But I don’t think that’s gonna be an issue.
Calleigh: (walking into the house) What do you mean?
Mackenzie: (smiling) I see the body language. You’re totally into each other.
Calleigh: (quietly) I never could keep things from you, could I?
Mackenzie: (laughing) Nope. (pause; then seriously) I don’t care either way as long as he makes you happy. (studying Calleigh’s face) You are happy, right?
Calleigh: (smiling a little) Yeah, I am. (still trying to place Mackenzie’s attitude)
In the kitchen- doorbell rings as Kenzie and Calleigh continue making dinner:
Mackenzie: (smirking as she stirs a pot) You should get that.
Calleigh: I’m goin’. (opens the door for Eric, who has flowers in one hand and a bag in the other) Hey. What’s all this?
Eric: (puts the bag down; separates a bouquet of wildflowers from a bouquet of peach roses and holds the roses out to her) These are for you. (gestures to the bag) That is a bottle of white Zinfandel and a bottle of Merlot. (shows her the wildflowers) These are for Mackenzie.
Calleigh: (quietly so Mackenzie doesn’t hear) Eric, they’re beautiful! Thank you. (tiptoes to kiss him quickly; turns towards the kitchen) Kenzie’s in here.
Eric: (smelling dinner) What smells so good? (hiding the flowers behind him)
Mackenzie: (busy with the pot) That would be dinner. (turning to face them) Hey, Eric.
Eric: Hey. (pause) Um, these are for you. (pulls out the flowers; Calleigh is pulling out vases)
Mackenzie: (smiling brightly) Wow. They’re beautiful. Thank you. (taking the flowers over to Calleigh, who is putting her flowers in water; quietly to Calleigh) I really like him, Cals.
Calleigh: (smiling; quietly but sternly) You can’t have him. (Mackenzie laughs)
Eric: So, do you need any help? (looking between Calleigh and Mackenzie)
Calleigh: Actually…(Mackenzie interrupts)
Mackenzie: No, thank you. Why don’t you two sit and relax while I finish dinner. (smiles at Calleigh mischievously)
Calleigh: Let me just finish this. (puts Mackenzie’s flowers in the second vase; stalling)
Mackenzie: Fine. Then scoot. (gestures toward the living room; phone rings in her pocket; looks at the screen, but ignores it)
Calleigh: (takes Mackenzie’s actions in) Who was that?
Mackenzie: (shrugging it off, but avoiding eye contact) It’s just a text message. I’ll look at it later. (turns Calleigh toward the living room with a push) Go keep Eric company. I’ll holler when dinner’s ready.
Calleigh: Fine. I’m goin’.
Mackenzie: Good. (makes a face at Calleigh; pulls out phone again when Calleigh leaves) That can’t be.
Calleigh and Eric in the living room, talking in hushed tones:
Eric: So have you two caught up on things? (Calleigh sits next to him and curls her legs up)
Calleigh: More or less…(preoccupied) Something’s not right though.
Eric: Like what?
Calleigh: I don’t know yet. (changes the subject) She likes you. (smiles)
Eric: Really? You think so?
Calleigh: She told me that she doesn’t care either way as long as I’m happy. But when you gave her those flowers…
Eric: She knows about us? (concerned)
Calleigh: (sheepishly) I never could keep things from her. (pause) She got it out of me in less time than it takes for me to drive home from work.
Eric: What? (shocked but laughing, since Calleigh is usually hard to break) Wow.
Calleigh: Yeah. Just watch out.
Eric: (confused) Why?
Calleigh: She’s been known to get defensive if someone hurts me.
Eric: (seriously) Who’s hurt you?
Calleigh: Ex-boyfriends, mostly. Take Jake for instance.
Eric: What about him? (trying to play cool, but clenching his jaw)
Calleigh: Well, you know we dated in the academy. Back then, things were fine. But we broke up after graduation. It wasn’t pretty. (Eric takes her hand, only to release it when Mackenzie walks in)
Mackenzie: It was far from pretty, Cals. (looks at Eric, who still looks a little guilty) That jerk broke her heart! (livid at the memory)
Calleigh: Kenzie…(admonishingly)
Mackenzie: No, Cals. (cooling down a little) You should have let me rip his throat out.
Eric: (chuckling nervously) Remind me not to make you upset with me. (looks at Calleigh) But if that is the case, you should’ve let her at Berkeley. Calleigh, I had no idea.
Calleigh: (quietly) I think that’s a good thing. You would’ve beaten him to a pulp, I think…if you’d known.
Eric: You’re probably right. (to Mackenzie) We have that in common, I guess.
Mackenzie: (confused) When did you meet him, Eric?
Eric: (looks at Calleigh before answering) A couple of years ago. Here in Miami…
Mackenzie: Cals, you didn’t…you didn’t tell me he came back.
Calleigh: No, I didn’t tell you that I was seeing him again. (defensively) I knew you wouldn’t like it, and it didn’t last for long, anyway.
Mackenzie: (heated) I hope you kicked him to the curb this time.
Calleigh: Yes, I did. (pause) Is dinner ready?
Mackenzie: (distracted) Um, yeah.
Eric: Good. (trying to change the subject) I’m starving. (helps Calleigh up from the couch and follows both ladies into the kitchen; whispers to Calleigh) I’m gonna head back to my place after dinner.
Calleigh: Eric…(trying to change his mind) You don’t have to.
Eric: No, but it’s the right thing to do. (pause) You need some time with her.
Calleigh: (understanding his reasons) Okay. (pause; changes subject) Did you get the other rounds from our other vic?
Eric: He was still in surgery at end of shift. We can get them tomorrow. (Mackenzie starts serving dinner)
Calleigh: Okay.
Calleigh’s Spare Room:
Mackenzie: (looking around as Calleigh gets out bedding) Cals, you’re sure about this?
Calleigh: (looking at Mackenzie) Will you stop arguing? Staying in the temp dorms is not an option.
Mackenzie: All right. (pause) But, only until I get a dorm room. (adamant)
Calleigh: (recognizing the tone) Fine. (pause) But you can always stay here, no questions asked.
Mackenzie: (smiling distractedly) Thanks, Cals. (phone buzzes in Mackenzie’s pocket; she pulls it out and reads the message, then pales and drops the phone on the bed)
Calleigh: Kenzie? (worried by Mackenzie’s reaction) Who was that?
Mackenzie: It’s…it’s nothing. (trying to pull herself together) I’ll deal with it in the morning.
Calleigh: (hesitant) Okay…(unconvinced; sees the number before Mackenzie picks up the phone and puts it back in her pocket) I’ll see you in the morning, then. (leaves the room and closes the door, but stands outside for a few minutes)
Mackenzie: (taking the phone out again and looking at the message) Oh, no.
In the kitchen in the morning- Kenzie at the table with breakfast; Calleigh walks in dressed for work and makes tea:
Mackenzie: (looking up from the papers in front of her) Good morning.
Calleigh: Morning. (bringing a cup to the table, but not sitting) So you’re gonna bring your stuff here until you find a place, right?
Mackenzie: If that’s okay. Not that I have a lot of stuff. Mostly clothes and books. (pauses; distracted) Cals, are you sure about this?
Calleigh: (concerned about Mackenzie’s distracted attitude) I thought we cleared that up last night. (studying Mackenzie) Kenzie, is everything okay?
Mackenzie: (snapping out of her funk; overly peppy) Yeah, everything’s fine. I think the jet lag is finally catching up. That’s all.
Calleigh: (resigned to believing the obvious lie) Okay…(puts a set of keys in Mackenzie’s hand) You’ll need those.
Mackenzie: (confused) What are these for?
Calleigh: There’s a key to the front door, and a key to my car.
Mackenzie: But…I can’t take your car. (Calleigh walks over to the refrigerator and roots around)
Calleigh: You can. I have the Hummer for work and I only use my car on my days off, which are few and far between due to staff shortages. Just use it. (starts to walk of the room)
Mackenzie: (tentatively) Calleigh?
Calleigh: (turns, expecting another argument) Yes?
Mackenzie: Thanks, for everything. (smiles slightly)
Calleigh: (smiles) You’re welcome. (looks at her watch) I gotta go. See ya later.
Mackenzie: Bye. (Calleigh leaves)
In her Hummer, Calleigh calls Eric:
Eric: (on the phone, shown split screen) Good morning. (smiling)
Calleigh: (smiling) Morning. Listen, could you do me a huge favor?
Eric: Name it.
Calleigh: (worried) I’m headed to Dade General to pick up those rounds from our vic- he didn’t make it. (pause) I have a phone number that I’d like traced.
Eric: (concerned by her tone and the request in general) Calleigh, what’s this about?
Calleigh: I’m not sure, Eric. Kenzie got a text message last night from this number that really spooked her. Could you check it out?
Eric: Sure. (walking into the lab) What’s the number?
Calleigh: 808-276-7467.
Eric: I’ll get on it. (concerned) Are you okay?
Calleigh: It’s not me I’m worried about. (pause) Thanks, Eric.
Eric: You’re welcome. See you when you get here.
Dade University- Kenzie during lunch:
Mackenzie: (on the phone with Calleigh, shown split screen) Hey Cals.
Calleigh: Hey. How’s your day goin’?
Mackenzie: Not bad. I only have one more class, then I’m done for the day.
Calleigh: Any problems with your stuff?
Mackenzie: None at all. Hey, after my last class I was gonna head back to your house. What did you want for dinner?
Calleigh: Surprise me. (walking into the lab to meet Eric)
Mackenzie: Okay…(pause) Is Eric coming tonight?
Calleigh: Umm…I’m not sure. (holds the phone and whispers to Eric) Are you comin’ for dinner?
Eric: (pauses as if in thought, then nods) Yeah.
Calleigh: (on the phone) Kenzie, he’ll be there. (pause) We’ll see ya later.
Mackenzie: Okay. See ya later. (hangs up; receives another text message)
Calleigh: (at the lab; to Eric) Did you get something?
Eric: (very serious) I think we may have a problem.
Calleigh: (worried by his expression) What kind of problem, Eric?
Eric: If the reports I found on this guy (pulling up a mug shot of the owner of the phone) are completely accurate…(looks at Calleigh) Kenzie is in more danger than if she were dealing with the Mala Noche.
Calleigh: (panicked) What do you mean?
Eric: Calleigh, these guys are literally into every form of trafficking you can think of. (pulling up more pictures) Kenzie helped put four of their top guys in prison, and they’re all under the age of 30.
Calleigh: (scared) How did she get caught up in this?
Eric: According to the reports, she had been dating one of the guys she put away. These guys (scanning through the pictures) were initially charged with aggravated assault, and things compounded from there. Kenzie was the star witness for the prosecution, and she still had the bruises when she testified.
Calleigh: (shocked) Bruises? What bruises? Eric…
Eric: (looks at Calleigh) Calleigh…(pause; then turns to face her) these guys assaulted Kenzie.
Calleigh: (freaking out) What?!
Eric: She had the sense to speak up, Calleigh. She kept her head- she went to the campus infirmary, had a friend call the cops. She made the nurse document everything with the police detective present, made a statement, filed charges. (making Calleigh look at him) She testified against these scumbags, and won. She’s strong, like you said.
Calleigh: (calming down a little) Why did they attack her, Eric?
Eric: I don’t know. But she had just dumped her boyfriend a week before. (pause) I think she dumped him because she found out what he was into.
Calleigh: Eric, she’s got to be terrified!
Eric: We need her to tell us what’s going on so we can help her.
Calleigh: What do we tell her? She’s hiding it as it is. She won’t just tell us if we ask.
Eric: We should tell her the truth; you’ve been getting this feeling that there’s something bothering her, and that we want to help. (Calleigh turns to leave) And Cal?
Calleigh: (turns to face him) Yeah?
Eric: If it goes beyond these messages, we need to tell H. We won’t be able to hide it for long if it escalates.
Calleigh: (comes back to Eric) Eric, that would mean telling Horatio about us.
Eric: (looks at Calleigh intently) I don’t care. I’ll transfer to nights if I have to.
Calleigh: But Eric…(protesting)
Eric: Calleigh, you mean more to me than this. (gestures to encompass the lab) I like working with you, and we make a good team, but I…(pauses) I would rather be with you.
Calleigh: I don’t want you giving up anything just to be with me.
Eric: I’m not giving anything up. (grins, trying to get her to smile) Besides, maybe H won’t care.
Calleigh: (looking up at him) I don’t think Horatio will be the problem…but let’s talk about this later.
Eric: Okay. See ya after work. (Calleigh turns to leave; Natalia sees Eric stare after her)
Outside Calleigh’s house; Eric has just arrived and Calleigh is walking out to meet him:
Calleigh: Hey. (stops a few steps away from his car as he gets out)
Eric: Hey. (looks at her; sees the worried expression) You okay?
Calleigh: I haven’t said anything to Kenzie yet. (pauses) I don’t want to think about it.
Eric: We just need to find out what those messages say.
Calleigh: (looking up at him) They must be terrifying if she reacts the way she did last night.
Eric: Then we need her to show us. (touches her arm)
Calleigh: (pauses; takes a deep breath) Okay. No time like the present. (Eric follows her into the house)
In the living room; Kenzie comes out of the kitchen:
Mackenzie: (overenthusiastically) Oh, perfect timing! Dinner’s ready.
Calleigh: Kenzie, can we talk to you for a minute?
Mackenzie: (suspicious) Uh, okay. What about?
Calleigh: (pause) Why don’t we sit? (Eric sits next to her; Mackenzie sits across from them)
Mackenzie: Cals, what’s wrong? (worried) Did something happen?
Eric: Kenzie, it’s okay. Nothing’s wrong.
Calleigh: Kenzie, you know I don’t like to pry, and I try not to lecture.
Mackenzie: Yeah…Calleigh, what is this about?
Calleigh: (pause) I’ve had this feeling that something’s bothering you, and I think it’s pretty serious because you haven’t said a word.
Mackenzie: Calleigh…
Calleigh: Kenzie, I know you. There’s something you’re not saying and it’s got you running scared. I…(looks at Eric) We want to help.
Eric: We don’t want anything to happen to you.
Mackenzie: (stands and starts pacing) Cals, you’re right. Something is bothering me, but you can’t help. I can’t…I won’t let you get involved in my problems.
Calleigh: Kenzie…
Mackenzie: No! I don’t want them coming after you, too!
Calleigh: Kenzie, who? (pause; no answer) Kenzie, here’s the thing: I memorized that number last night.
Mackenzie: (stops pacing) You what? C: I memorized the number and asked Eric to run a trace for me.
Eric: The ID that popped was for a guy in Honolulu, currently serving a 20-year prison sentence. (Calleigh stands to go to Mackenzie, who is holding back tears) That information also gave us the entire case file, and any linked cases.
Calleigh: What I don’t understand is what you have to do with those cases. Who is this guy? (waits for an answer) Kenzie, please tell us.
Mackenzie: (letting the tears fall) He’s my ex!
Calleigh: Your ex-boyfriend?
Mackenzie: (through tears; Calleigh hands her some tissue) Yeah. (deep breath) I met him last summer. He worked in a club that Sage and I used to go to. We started dating a month later. (Calleigh pulls Mackenzie to the couch to sit between her and Eric)
Eric: (confused) Who’s Sage?
Mackenzie: My roommate. We’ve known each other since the beginning of high school.
Calleigh: What happened?
Mackenzie: Last August, Sage and I went to the club and Derek was supposed to be working. When I asked for him, the manager told me he’d fired Derek two weeks before for stealing from the safe and suspected drug possession with intent to sell.
Eric: Did they have proof?
Mackenzie: (calming down) Nothing concrete, but with his suspicious activities leading up to his termination, it didn’t look good.
Calleigh: What did you do?
Mackenzie: I waited until he came by the next day and asked how work was. (pause) The bastard lied to my face and I made sure he knew that I knew the truth. Then I kicked him out of my and Sage’s dorm and told him it was over.
Eric: (calculating in his head) That was a week before you were attacked.
Mackenzie: (dabbing at her eyes, then looking at Eric) Yeah. He kept trying to get in touch with me the whole week after I dumped him and I finally told him to come and get his stuff. Then I found the memory card- proof of what he was into, and proof that he’d been cheating on me for months. Sage stayed with me while he was in our dorm room. He left the memory card behind.
Calleigh: That’s why you were attacked. He realized you had the memory card, and he couldn’t risk you turning it in when you realized what was on it.
Mackenzie: I went to the police the morning of the attack to turn it in, and make a statement.
Calleigh: Could he have followed you?
Mackenzie: I doubt it. One of the girls across the hall said he spent most of the morning pounding on our door when Sage and I were gone. If he’d known I’d taken it to the police, I don’t think he would’ve bothered.
Eric: How did they catch your attackers?
Mackenzie: (smiling for the first time) I’m not majoring in criminal science for nothing. (looks at Calleigh) I remembered what you told me, Cals, about not panicking, and I made sure to scratch them. Lucky for me, Derek never paid any attention when I talked about discussions from class, and none of them figured I was identifying them under the guise of fighting back. When Sage brought the detectives to the infirmary, I told them everything I could remember and made sure they collected trace and nail scrapings.
Calleigh: Were all of them in CODIS?
Mackenzie: All but one. I found out during the trial that he was a new recruit and his initiation was attacking me.
Eric: How long did the trials last?
Mackenzie: They were tried together. (pause) Those were the longest two months of my life.
Calleigh: (quietly) When did you start getting these messages?
Mackenzie: Last night when I was here with you. (Calleigh looks at her) I swear.
Eric: I don’t understand. Why did they wait so long to start sending these messages?
Mackenzie: (looks at Eric) I don’t know, Eric. I think it may be because the rest of the gang has been laying low…and the appeals were denied the day before I left Oahu. I just can’t figure out how they got my new number. (to Calleigh) That’s why I was so shocked after that first message.
Calleigh: How many of these guys are there?
Mackenzie: I don’t know, but they are part of the reason I came to Miami. The state prosecutor couldn’t guarantee that the trouble would stop once Derek and the others were in prison. He recommended an “extended vacation”. (to Calleigh) Then Dad got transferred to Germany and Mom was going with him, so I decided to come here- closer to family.
Eric: That was smart, considering the situation.
Mackenzie: (looking at Calleigh with apology) But I didn’t come here to pull you into this, Cals. I prayed this (gesturing to mean the whole situation) wouldn’t happen.
Calleigh: (comforting) Kenzie, I’m glad you’re here. We’ll get through this.
Eric: (looks at Calleigh and Mackenzie) We can do this.
Mackenzie: (looking at Calleigh and Eric) What about work? I know the department’s policy on relationships between coworkers. This’ll cause trouble for you guys.
Eric: (looks at Calleigh, then Mackenzie) It’s not even an issue. If it becomes an issue, I’ll transfer to the night shift.
Mackenzie: (thinking, then realizing what Eric means) Eric, I can’t let you do that, not because of me!
Eric: (smiles) What is it with the Duquesne and Davis women? They’re so bossy.
Calleigh: (sarcastic laugh a she shakes her head) Ha! (Calleigh remembers when Eric wouldn’t let her go home alone)
Eric: (to Mackenzie) Calleigh means more to me than the job. (pause) We’ll figure it out.
Calleigh: (hesitant to agree with Eric) Kenzie, as much as I dislike the idea myself, Eric’s right. But we’ll deal with that if and when we have to.
Mackenzie: But…(starts to argue, then stops) Okay. So…what do we do in the meantime?
Eric: (looking at Calleigh for agreement) We wait. We can’t do anything until you get another message.
Mackenzie: Okay. (looks at both of them) Thank you. (stands) Now, just give me a few minutes to warm up dinner. (goes to the kitchen)
Eric: (stopping Calleigh before she can follow Mackenzie) Wait.
Calleigh: (turning to look at him) Eric…(questioningly)
Eric: (looks at Calleigh, puts his hands on her hips) Calleigh, I meant what I said. I want you in my life…always.
Calleigh: Eric, I’m not going anywhere. (Eric starts to interrupt, only to stop when Calleigh puts a finger to his lips) If this goes to where we need to tell Horatio about us, then that’s what we’ll do. (tiptoes to kiss him, then takes him into the kitchen)
Later in the living room, Eric standing at the window, looking out:
Calleigh: (coming up behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist) What are you thinking about?
Eric: I was thinking about how much Kenzie reminds me of Mari.
Calleigh: (pause) You miss her.
Eric: It’s not so much that I miss her. It’s the fact that there’s so many things that I see in Kenzie that remind me of how Mari was: the tenacity, the courage…and that protective streak. (Calleigh moves to his side)
Calleigh: Marisol was a great woman, Eric, and a great sister, I think.
Eric: (turning to look at her) What I mean is that I feel protective toward her, like I do with my family…and with you. (walking to the door)
Calleigh: (pause) Thank you, for being willing to protect her.
Eric: You’re welcome. (leans down to kiss her) I’ll see you in the morning.
At the lab- Kenzie’s first day:
Calleigh: (to Mackenzie as they walk through the lab) Did you sleep okay?
Mackenzie: (walking beside Calleigh, deep in thought) Well enough. (looking at Calleigh, who looks tired) Did you sleep at all? (concerned)
Calleigh: Don’t worry about me. (walking into Natalia’s lab) Hey, Nat.
Natalia: Hey, Cal. (reaching for the results of her analysis) Here’s the results from the DNA I got off of your vic. No hits in CODIS yet, but that’s the local search. I’m expanding to national, but that could take awhile.
Calleigh: Thanks. (turns to Mackenzie, who is quietly observing from the doorway) Nat, I’d like you to meet someone. This is Mackenzie Davis, our new lab intern. Kenzie, this is Natalia Boa Vista.
Natalia: (shaking Mackenzie’s hand) Nice to meet you, Mackenzie.
Mackenzie: Same here. And please, call me Kenzie…(phone buzzes in her pocket; Mackenzie freezes as Calleigh comes over to her)
Calleigh: Kenzie? (seeing the instant fear on Mackenzie’s face)
Mackenzie: Cals…(pulls out the phone slowly as if it might blow up)
Natalia: Cal, what's wrong?
Calleigh: Kenzie, what is it? (watches as Mackenzie answers, only to pale and sink to the floor with Natalia and Calleigh ruching to her)
Mackenzie: Cals, it’s them. But this is different. It’s a video.
Natalia: Calleigh, what is going on?
Mackenzie: (to Calleigh as she watches the video, then shows it to Calleigh) Cals, tell her. They have video- they know I’m in Miami!
Natalia: Calleigh, what is this? (gesturing to the video, which she is watching over Calleigh’s shoulder)
Mackenzie: Calleigh, that video is from yesterday at school! (curls up)
Natalia: (impatiently) Calleigh…
Calleigh: Nat, Kenzie is my cousin. She’s been getting threatening text messages since she arrived in Miami two days ago. (takes out her phone and gives it to Mackenzie; quietly) Call Eric, Kenzie. Tell him to get in here now.
Natalia: Who are these messages from? (trying to get a grip on the situation)
Mackenzie: Cals, what about…?
Calleigh: Now, Kenzie. (shakes her head when Mackenzie starts to argue)
Natalia: Calleigh, what the hell is this? (following Calleigh to the door) This can’t be about a case- she just started.
Calleigh: This has nothing to do with the lab. This is aimed at Kenzie personally.
Natalia: (concerned to see Calleigh flustered) What can I do to help?
Calleigh: (bends to comfort Mackenzie; quietly to Natalia) Could you find Horatio and Ryan?
Natalita: Sure. (leaves to find Horatio and Ryan)
Mackenzie: (hanging up the phone and giving it to Calleigh) Eric’s on his way. (urgently) Cals, you can’t tell Horatio and Ryan. It’ll screw things up for you and Eric!
Calleigh: It’ll be fine.
Mackenzie: (looking at her phone in Calleigh’s hand; then looking at Calleigh in horror with tears in her eyes) One of the Bishops is here in Miami…I’ve put you in danger- they know where you live!
Calleigh: Kenzie, I’ll be fine. We’ll be fine.
Eric: (running in; frantic) What happened? Calleigh?
Calleigh: We’re fine…but it’s escalating. (hands him Mackenzie’s phone) They know where she is.
Eric: (watches the video, then looks at Mackenzie) Kenzie? Listen to me. They won’t get near you. I won’t let them.
Horatio: (coming in with Natalia and Ryan; quietly) Who exactly are you talking about?
Eric: (turns and looks up at Horatio) H…(pause) These guys are worse than the Mala Noche, but we don’t have jurisdiction. (shows Horatio the video)
Horatio: We do now, Eric.
AV Lab, Mackenzie’s phone on display. Eric and Horatio check it out as Kenzie and Calleigh wait outside:
Horatio: Eric, the young woman outside…
Eric: (pause) Her name’s Mackenzie Davis. She’s MDPD’s new lab intern. (pause) And she’s Calleigh’s cousin.
Horatio: I saw the memo on the internship. I didn’t realize Calleigh had family in Miami besides Duke.
Eric: (hesitant) Kenzie transferred to Dade University from Hawaii. (Horatio notices Eric’s use of the nickname, but says nothing)
Horatio: (studying Eric, who’s extremely tense) All right. What’s going on?
Eric: (continues manipulating the display) She’s been getting these threatening text messages since she arrived in Miami. This last message was the first video.
Horatio: So the situation’s escalating.
Eric: Yeah. (pause) These guys are dangerous, H.
Horatio: (turns to go out to Calleigh and Mackenzie) Eric, I have no doubt about that. (goes outside)
Calleigh: (to Mackenzie) Kenzie? You okay?
Mackenzie: (looks up at Calleigh) I think so. Calleigh, I’m so sorry. (Horatio comes over; hears the last)
Horatio: Calleigh.
Calleigh: (turns to him) Horatio. (looks at him expectantly)
Horatio: May I have a word with Ms. Davis, please?
Calleigh: (hesitant) Sure. (looks at Mackenzie, then goes into the AV lab with Eric)
Horatio: Ms. Davis, my name is Horatio Caine. Can you tell me what this is about?
Mackenzie: (looking up from her lap) Please, Lieutenant, it’s Kenzie.
Horatio: (nods) All right. Kenzie, what is this all about?
Mackenzie: I helped put members of the Black Bishops in prison and now they’re coming after me.
Horatio: The Black Bishops?
Mackenzie: They’re called Na Pihopa `Ele`ele on Oahu. The case files are public record.
Horatio: I’m sure they are. Do you have somewhere to stay?
Mackenzie: I’ve been staying with Calleigh. (tears up again) But they know where she lives. I’ve put everyone I care about in danger.
Horatio: Mackenzie, we won’t let anything happen. (Eric comes out of the AV lab)
Eric: H, another message just came in…It’s another video.
Horatio: Thank you, Eric. (to Mackenzie) Hang in there, Mackenzie. (turns to follow Eric)
Mackenzie: Lieutenant. (Horatio stops and looks at her) I need to see this.
Horatio: (pause) All right. (holds the door open)
Mackenzie: (stops in front of him) Thank you. (Horatio nods)
Horatio: (in the AV lab) Eric, what do we have?
Eric: It’s another streamed video…all we can get from it is that it’s from the same source as the first.
Mackenzie: The first video was taken yesterday on campus.
Calleigh: (standing next to Eric) This video…(sees herself with Mackenzie) This was taken…
Eric: (in realization) Outside your house.
Mackenzie: They must have followed me from school. (frustrated) How did they find out I came to Miami? (stands next to Calleigh as Eric manipulates the controls)
Calleigh: Kenzie, who knew you were coming here?
Mackenzie: Only Sage and Matt, her boyfriend…and my professors. Sage and Matt would never tell anyone where I am, unless…unless they attacked Sage. (thinking) Derek never liked her. She stood up to him.
Horatio: Mackenzie, is there a way to get in touch with Sage?
Mackenzie: I can try. (Calleigh holds out her phone) Thanks, Cals. (dials Sage’s number; no answer) It’s going to voicemail. (calculates time difference) Let me try Matt. (dials again; Matt picks up) Matt?
Matt: (shown split screen) Who is this? (groggily)
Mackenzie: Matt, it’s Kenzie. Where’s Sage?
Matt: Kenzie? (alert; concerned) What’s up?
Mackenzie: Never mind, Matt. Where’s Sage?
Matt: She’s in the shower. Kenzie, are you okay?
Mackenzie: I’m fine, Matt. I just need to talk to Sage.
Matt: (to Sage, who has just come out of the shower) It’s Kenzie. She wants to talk to you.
Sage: Kenzie? (confused; then worried; grabs the phone) Kenzie? What’s wrong?
Mackenzie: Sage, are you and Matt okay?
Sage: Yeah, we’re fine. What’s going on?
Mackenzie: You’re not hurt? No one’s been hassling you?
Sage: Kenzie, we’re fine. I’m more worried about you. Are you okay?
Mackenzie: I’m fine. Listen, who else knows where I am?
Sage: I haven’t told anyone. Neither has Matt, and none of the professors have mentioned you in class.
Mackenzie: Okay. (pause) I need you and Matt to stay together. Don’t go anywhere alone.
Sage: Okay. (worried) Kenzie, what’s going on?
Mackenzie: (quietly) They found me. I don’t know how they did it, but at least one of them is here in Miami. (pause; thinking) Sage, do you have your address book?
Sage: Let me get it. (searches her purse and backpack) It’s not here. I know I put it…(confused; frantic) Kenzie, it’s gone. I can’t find it.
Mackenzie: (thinking fast) When did you use it last?
Sage: The day you left. Remember? I wrote down your new information because my phone was dead…(catching on) Oh no, Kenzie!
Mackenzie: (to Calleigh, who is listening to the conversation intently with Horatio and Eric) Her address book is gone. That’s how they got my number.
Sage: Oh my God, Kenzie! This is my fault!
Mackenzie: Sage, listen. Have you run into anyone new on campus? At the club?
Sage: I haven’t seen anyone new on campus and I haven’t gone near the club since your attack. I’m sorry, Kenzie.
Mackenzie: Sage, it’s not your fault. I don’t blame you.
Sage: Will you be all right? Are you safe?
Mackenzie: I’m fine. (looks around- Calleigh & Eric, Horatio and Natalia & Ryan, who just walked in) And I’m completely safe.
Sage: Kenzie, catch these bastards.
Mackenzie: Thanks, Sage. (hangs up)
Eric: Does she have any idea who it could’ve been?
Mackenzie: No. She hasn’t seen anyone new at school and she’s avoided the club since I was attacked.
Calleigh: So there’s no way to figure out who we’re dealing with from the gang.
Mackenzie: Probably not, but Sage will let us know if she thinks of something. (quietly to Calleigh) She’s blaming herself, and she’s afraid for me.
Calleigh: Nothing’s gonna happen to you. (bumps her) Anyone who tries to come near you is gonna have to go through about half of MDPD first…(looks around) In case you didn’t notice.
Natalia: (coming over to Calleigh and Mackenzie; to the whole room) So what now?
Ryan: (watching the videos on the screen) We could try analyzing the videos again.
Natalia: What do you mean?
Ryan: What if we tried for a reflection image?
Eric: (manipulating controls, then stopping to look at Ryan) You wanna try getting a reflection of the person who shot the video.
Ryan: Yeah. (tapping a control) There’s a few reflective surfaces we could work with.
Calleigh: It’s worth a try. (looks around; Horatio nods)
Ryan: (to Horatio) I’ll see what I can do. Maybe I’ll pull Dave in.
Horatio: (to Calleigh) Calleigh, get me those case files, please.
Calleigh: (squeezes Mackenzie’s arm, then heads for the door) I’m on it.
Mackenzie: Horatio? (waits for him to turn) I’d like to help.
Horatio: Mackenzie, I can’t put you on this.
Mackenzie: Oh no. I meant help with the backlog. I know I can’t work this case because I’m involved in it. But I would like to do something- anything is better than just waiting.
Natalia: (to Horatio) Actually, Horatio, I could use her. There’s about another dozen or so samples that need DNA results.
Horatio: All right. (Mackenzie walks out with Natalia; to Ryan) Mr. Wolfe, let me know when you get something.
Ryan: (already working the controls) You’ll be the first.
Horatio: (stepping outside with Eric) Eric, do you have a minute?
Eric: Sure, H. (walks with Horatio to the parking lot)
Horatio: (by his Hummer) How involved are you in this, Eric?
Eric: What do you mean? (trying for oblivious and failing)
Horatio: You and Calleigh…(sees Eric’s face) You know department policy.
Eric: Yeah…
Horatio: I know you and Calleigh are close.
Eric: I love her, H. The change in department policy was IAB’s issue with Stetler and Detective Salas’ relationship.
Horatio: I know, Eric.
Eric: I’ll transfer to the night shift if I have to, H. I’m not giving Calleigh up.
Horatio: (looks Eric in the eye) I’m not telling you to. But I will tell you this: tread lightly. (waits to see if Eric understands)
Eric: (with gratitude) Thanks, H.
Horatio: (getting in the Hummer) Anytime, Eric. Anytime.
DNA Lab #1, Kenzie and Natalia running analysis:
Natalia: So you and Calleigh are pretty close.
Mackenzie: I guess you could say that. I’ve always thought of her more as a big sister.
Natalia: When did you move to Hawaii?
Mackenzie: (taking samples, running tests, etc.) When I was 14. My dad was transferred to Schofield Barracks.
Natalia: Your dad was military? (surprised)
Mackenzie: (smiles affectionately) Still is. He and my mom just moved to Germany.
Natalia: Is that why you came to Miami? (running a search through CODIS)
Mackenzie: Mostly. Then all of this (gesturing) happened. (pause) I just wanted to feel safe again, and Calleigh’s always been there for me.
Natalia: She’s pretty fierce when someone she cares about is threatened. (smiling) I’d hate to be on the receiving end of her wrath.
Mackenzie: (laughs for the first time) I know. (machines beep and reports print out) That’s the last one.
Natalia: Great. (takes the reports) Thanks for helping out.
Mackenzie: No, thank you for keeping me busy.
Natalia: You’re welcome. (pause) Why don’t you go check with Calleigh? I’ll get these filed.
Mackenzie: Okay. (pause) Thanks, Natalia. (leaves)
In Calleigh’s lab:
Calleigh: (seeing Mackenzie walk in) Hey. You finished with Natalia already?
Mackenzie: Yeah. (pause) It was good to get my hands into it. (looking at the screen) What have you gotten so far?
Calleigh: I’m just waiting for the last batch of trial transcripts to come through, then we can check with Ryan in AV.
Mackenzie: (quietly) Okay.
Calleigh: Kenzie, it’ll be fine.
Mackenzie: I know. I just feel horrible for getting you and Eric involved in my mess.
Calleigh: About that…(Mackenzie looks at her) Eric talked to Horatio. Horatio’s not gonna report us to IAB.
Mackenzie: Wow. (pause) But what about IAB finding out on their own?
Calleigh: (with a disgusted, but determined look) We’ll deal with Rick Stetler when we get to that point. (picks up the last of the reports) Let’s get down to AV.
AV Lab- Ryan with Dave (AV guy):
Calleigh: Hey Ryan, Dave. Have you gotten lucky yet?
Ryan: Not yet, but I think we’re close.
Dave: We just need a clearer picture. (pauses as he moves things around) I need to change the resolution, and zoom in a little more…(working the controls; Eric comes in with Natalia)
Eric: Did you get anything? (moves to stand behind Calleigh and Mackenzie)
Ryan: I think we’re just…about…there! (Dave stops; Ryan pulls out his phone to call Horatio) Hey H. We’ve got something. (hangs up)
Eric: (studying the picture as Dave continues to clear up the facial features) Kenzie, do you know that guy?
Mackenzie: (as the picture finally clears) I can’t believe it! How could I have missed that?
Calleigh: Kenzie, who is he?
Mackenzie: His name’s Jacob…He used to hang out with Derek at the club, until he got busted for being a bookie.
Calleigh: What does he have to do with this?
Mackenzie: My guess is he joined the Bishops when he finished his stint in community service. He was always at the club.
Eric: So he knew you.
Mackenzie: Yeah. And he wasn’t my biggest fan.
Eric: What do you mean?
Mackenzie: We had almost identical class schedules at UH. He’s really smart. We competed for a couple of internships. When he got busted, he lost his scholarship and had to do work study to finish a few classes.
Calleigh: So you got the internships, and he got nothing.
Mackenzie: Yeah.
Calleigh: Maybe he’s not doing this for the Bishops. Maybe he’s getting revenge. (Horatio walks in)
Horatio: What do we have, Mr. Wolfe?
Ryan: We’ve got a clear reflection of the suspect and we’re starting a triangulation on the cell signal. (Dave takes over the controls) As long as the phone stays on, we should be able to pinpoint him.
Horatio: Send me the location when you get it.
Ryan: Will do.
Horatio: Eric, let’s get him. (walks out)
Eric: Right behind you. (to Mackenzie and Calleigh) We’ll get him. (follows Horatio at a run)
Natalia: Now what? (watching the screen as the signal holds on a location)
Calleigh: (looks at Natalia, then at Mackenzie) Now, we wait. (to Mackenzie) They’ll get him. (pause; then to distract Mackenzie) Let’s go to the firearms lab. I’ve got an idea for my open case.
Mackenzie: (looks at Calleigh after turning away from the screen) Sure.
Horatio and Eric at Dade University:
Horatio: Where’s the signal, Eric?
Eric: (watching the scanner) We’re heading straight for it.
Horatio: (spotting Jacob) There he is…let’s take him, Eric.
Eric: (at Jacob) Miami Dade PD! Put your hands up! (Jacob runs; Eric chases him down and tackles him, then proceeds to cuff him; Horatio catches up as Frank comes over)
Horatio: You okay, Eric?
Eric: (winded) Yeah. (hauls Jacob off the ground; Frank takes hold of him) Get this guy outta here, Frank.
Frank: (handling Jacob roughly) Will do. (to Jacob) Move it, pal. (loads him into a cruiser)
Horatio: Nice work, Eric.
Eric: (catching his breath) Thanks.
Horatio: Let’s get back.
At the lab, in interrogation- Frank and Eric with Jacob:
Eric: (shows Mackenzie’s picture to Jacob) Why have you been stalking her?
Jacob: (sarcastically) I ain’t been stalkin’ no one.
Eric: That’s bull, and you know it. Why?
Frank: Hey wise guy. Answer the question.
Jacob: (defiantly) Or what?
Eric: Why are you after her? (shows Mackenzie’s picture again)
Jacob: (pause; then with punk attitude) I was just havin’ some fun.
Eric: Who sent you after her?
Jacob: What? What are you talkin’ about?
Eric: Who sent you to stalk her?
Jacob: Dude, nobody sent me. I came on my own.
Eric: So where’d you get this from? (shows a picture of the phone they’d tracked)
Jacob: I found it.
Eric: You took it. (Calleigh and Mackenzie stop outside of interrogation)
Jacob: (looks out at Calleigh and Mackenzie in shock) You can’t prove a damn thing with that.
Eric: (smirks as he notices Jacob’s reaction to Mackenzie) That’s where you’re wrong. I can prove that this phone belongs to a friend of yours who’s currently doing 20. That friend is a known member of the Black Bishops.
Jacob: So what’s that got to do with me? I haven’t done anything illegal. (finally dropping the punk attitude)
Frank: Pal, you better check your definition of illegal.
Jacob: So I sent a couple of messages to scare her. That’s all.
Eric: You’d better be sure that’s all you’ve done, or I’ll be seeing you again soon. (to Frank in disgust) Let this creep out.
Frank: (to Jacob) Beat it. (looks at Eric) You wanna tail this guy?
Eric: Yeah. Let’s see how far this jerk goes, who he talks to.
Frank: Can do. (walks off, after nodding at Calleigh and Mackenzie)
Calleigh: (to Eric) So how’d that go?
Eric: We can’t get him on connection to the Bishops with circumstantial evidence. Frank’s putting a tail on him.
Mackenzie: So why is he here? (pacing back and forth)
Eric: He claims that he’s here on his own- no Bishop influence. We may be able to get him for harassment, but nothing solid yet.
Calleigh: Then we hang on a little longer. (pause) All the evidence we have here is in order. (to Eric) And I’ve run all the ballistic evidence on our other case. No priors for either weapon, so there’s no way of pinning down our shooter, or shooters.
Dade University campus:
Jacob: (on a prepaid phone) What’s up?
Cory: Get out to the ferry dock.
Jacob: Okay. (starts walking)
Cory: Be quick about it!
Jacob: Okay! (reaches the ferry dock) What’s goin’ on?
Cory: What’d the cops want?
Jacob: They wanted to know why I was chasin’ after Derek’s ex.
Cory: What’d you tell ‘em?
Jacob: Relax, man. I told em’ I was trying to scare her.
Cory: She’ll be plenty scared when we’re doing here… She’s gonna wish she never met No Pahoa `Ele`ele. (pause) And you better keep your trap shut!
Jacob: Hey, I ain’t saying a damn word!
Cory: It better stay that way!
Jacob: (hesitant) What are you gonna do to her anyway?
Cory: We’re gonna make sure she can’t contest another appeal to get Derek and the others out. If we can’t get them out of Halawa with the next appeal, they’re headed to Arizona for the rest of their sentences.
Jacob: What makes you think she’s gonna go back to Honolulu just for the appeal hearing?
Cory: Because the little b**** knows too much! (pause; then snickers) We’re gonna make her look like a fool…and then nothing she’ll say will pass muster.
Jacob: Then what?
Cory: We get rid of her completely…(thinks for a minute) Better yet, we’ll just take her out now, before she even has a chance at the appeal hearing!
Jacob: (shocked and confused) Wait, what?! Are you crazy?! We can’t kill her- her new friends are cops!!
Cory: All the more reason to be quick about it! (gives Jacob a gun)
Dade University, the next day:
Dave: (answering phone) Hello?
Eric: (on the other end; shown split screen with Calleigh) Hey Dave. It’s Eric.
Dave: (stopping outside a building) What’s up?
Eric: (looking at Calleigh) Could you do me a favor?
Dave: I have class in 15 minutes. Can it wait until this afternoon?
Eric: Actually, you can do this while you’re in class.
Dave: (confused) What are you talkin’ about?
Eric: Calleigh’s cousin, Mackenzie…She’s in your class. You think you could kind of watch out for her? She shouldn’t be alone because we don’t know what that creep is up to. But I have a really bad feeling.
Dave: I take it you don’t want her to know you sent me. (grinning)
Eric: (smiling sheepishly) I’d rather she not find out. (pause) You met her yesterday, right?
Dave: Yeah, kind of. (pause) We weren’t properly introduced, I’m sad to say.
Eric: (grinning) Just keep her company, would you? That creep is up to something.
Dave: Sure, Eric. (pause) By the way, you owe me. (laughs) Just kidding.
Eric: Thanks, Dave. Call me or Calleigh if something looks wrong, okay?
Dave: Sure. (hangs up and walks to class, where he spots Mackenzie) Hey. You’re Calleigh’s cousin, right? Mackenzie?
Mackenzie: Yeah…(thinks about his identity) You’re Dave, from the AV lab, right?
Dave: Yeah. I’m taking a couple of classes while working towards a degree in criminology. I’m just a tech right now.
Mackenzie: Cool. I think that’s great. (pause) I love the AV lab, by the way.
Dave: Maybe we’ll get a case together some time. (smiling; pause) You don’t mind if I sit here, do you? (pointing at the seat next to her)
Mackenzie: Not at all. (pause; quietly to him) Actually, I’d welcome the company of a familiar face. I haven’t met a lot of people since I got here.
Dave: (smiling as he sits) Well, at least you know most of the people in the lab by name. That’s at least a dozen or so.
Mackenzie: Thanks. (pause) So, what classes are you taking?
Dave: I’ve got Physics and this Chemistry class. I’m also planning on taking Psychology at some point. What about you?
Mackenzie: This is actually my last Chemistry course. I’ve already finished Physics and Biology- I guess you could say I’ve majored in the practical sciences. Then I have to finish my internship at the lab.
Dave: Cool. (grinning) You’re really smart! (professor walks in; talking ends)
Eric heading to firearms to see Calleigh; phone rings:
Eric: (answering) Delko.
Frank: Eric, I’ve been tailing this guy for the last six hours and he hasn’t even put one toe out of line.
Eric: What about last night?
Frank: All reports say he spent the night on campus in the dorms, except for about five minutes down on the ferry dock.
Eric: He stayed on campus?
Frank: He didn’t come out until this morning. (pause) You think he’s a registered student?
Eric: No, that would’ve come up when we ran his prints. Maybe he’s got a friend? (walks into the firing range as Calleigh fires test shots)
Frank: I’ll check it out. (hangs up) E: (watching her finish up, then take off her safety gear) Hey.
Calleigh: (jumping a little at the surprise) Hey! (smiling and breathing fast) You scared me!
Eric: (grins) I couldn’t help it. (seriously) Frank called.
Calleigh: (all business as she picks up her test rounds and equipment) What’d he say?
Eric: Jacob never left campus after a short visit to the ferry dock when we cut him loose.
Calleigh: (putting it together in her head) You think he knows someone on campus?
Eric: (nods) Frank’s gonna check it out. (pause) I’d like to know why he was at the ferry dock. All reports say he was there for maybe five minutes, but no mention of him meeting someone.
Dade University- Dave and Kenzie leaving class:
Dave: (picking up Mackenzie’s books and his own) So where are you headed?
Mackenzie: This is my last class for the day. I have to get to the lab this afternoon. What about you?
Dave: (following her out into the courtyard) Well, this is my last class until 7. And it’s my day off, so I’m totally free. (pause) You wanna grab something to eat before you head to the lab?
Mackenzie: (debating on whether to flirt, decides to go for it) Sure. What sounds good? (heading to the parking lot)
Dave: (following her to Calleigh’s car; stunned) Wow.
Mackenzie: (looking at him and reaching for her books) What?
Dave: Nice ride! (staring at it) Yours?
Mackenzie: (smiling and taking her books) No, Calleigh’s. I just get to use it since she’s always in the Hummer. (affection in her voice)
Dave: (looking at Mackenzie; hearing her tone) You two are really close, huh?
Mackenzie: (looking up at him) She’s one of my best friends, and she’s…(cut off as Dave pulls her down and covers her as shots are fired)
Dave: (shots stop; checks Mackenzie for wounds) Are you okay?
Mackenzie: (looking at him, checking him; in shock) I think so. What about you?
Dave: I’m fine. (pulls out his phone; hears sirens, so calls Eric instead of 911) Eric, it’s Dave. Get down to Dade U. That jerk just took a few shots at Mackenzie.
Eric: (shown split screen with Calleigh in the Hummer) We’re on our way. We heard the dispatch. (pause) Are you both okay?
Dave: We’re…fine. Just a little shook up. We’ll see you when you get here. (hangs up as Mackenzie starts to protest) Eric made me promise not to tell you he’d asked me to stay with you. They’ll be here soon. (looks up as Frank drives up, followed by a squad car and two uniforms)
Frank: Dave? Is she…?
Dave: She’s not hit. How’d you get here so fast?
Frank: I was headed this way when I heard the shots. I just left the admissions office.
Dave: You called it in.
Frank: Yeah. (pause) You sure you two are okay?
Dave: (looking at Mackenzie) Yeah. (Frank goes over to the squad car; Dave bends to look at Mackenzie) Mackenzie?
Mackenzie: (looking at him) Why did Eric make you promise not to tell me? (Dave looks away; Mackenzie turns his head so she can see his eyes) Dave, why?
Dave: He didn’t say why. (putting his hands on hers) I think he and Calleigh figured you’d object to protection.
Mackenzie: (pausing as she checks him over again) Normally, they’d be right. But…you just saved my life. Thank you. (pulls him to sit next to her; leans on him)
Dave: You’re welcome. I’m glad you’re okay. (gives her a hug as Eric and Calleigh pull up) Stay here. I’ll be right back. (stands to meet Eric; Calleigh continues past him to Mackenzie)
Calleigh: (kneeling) Kenzie?
Mackenzie: (looking up) I’m fine, Cals. (trying to joke, but tearing up; Calleigh hugs her) He saved my life, Cals. (realizing the car might be damaged) Oh my God! Your car! Did he hit your car? (rushing to check)
Brooke: (follows Mackenzie as she checks the car) Kenzie, it doesn’t matter. I’m just glad you and Dave weren’t hurt.
Mackenzie: (looking up, confused; not finding any bullet holes) Something’s not right.
Calleigh: (following Mackenzie’s gaze) There isn’t any damage…no bullet holes…
Eric: (to Dave while watching Calleigh and Mackenzie circle the car) You sure you’re okay?
Dave: Yeah. (looking at Calleigh and Mackenzie) Not a scratch.
Eric: Thanks, Dave, for being with her.
Dave: (watching Mackenzie with more concern) Is she gonna be okay? She was in shock.
Eric: (recognizing the look and concern) I think so. She’s tougher than she looks. (pause) Why don’t you get her outta here? You don’t mind taking her to the lab, do you?
Dave: Not at all. (pause) The guy that did this? I don’t think he was really trying to hit her.
Eric: What do you mean?
Dave: It felt, and looked like, he was putting on a show of trying to kill her. (pause) And from looking at Calleigh’s car, his aim was wide.
Eric: (thinking) Thanks, Dave. (both go over to Calleigh and Mackenzie)
Dave: (to Mackenzie, when she looks at him) How about we get out of here?
Mackenzie: (looks at Eric, than at Calleigh, who nods slightly) I’d like that. (pause; to Dave) You don’t mind?
Dave: (grinning) Not at all. (flirting) I believe we still have lunch plans. (turns and winks at Calleigh, who smiles) We’ll see you guys back at the lab. (leads Mackenzie to his car)
Calleigh: Eric…(Eric looks at her) I think Dave is smitten with my darling cousin.
Eric: (grinning) I think you’re right. (pause) I know exactly how he feels. (looks around) Dave said it didn’t feel like Jacob was really trying to kill Kenzie.
Calleigh: (thinking as they walk the scene) Dave and Kenzie were on the driver’s side of my car, so Jacob was shooting from the passenger side. (walking to the end of the parking lot; finding casings and footprints) 9-mil.
Eric: He was shooting from here. (follows the footprints into the shrubs; finds a gun) Calleigh, I think this may be our weapon.
Calleigh: It’s consistent with the casings. Let’s see if we can find any of the bullets. (continues to process the scene with Eric)
At the lab; Dave and Kenzie waiting outside on the bench when Eric and Calleigh pull up:
Dave: (sitting next to Mackenzie, watching the parking lot) Here they come.
Mackenzie: (looking up) I hope they found something.
Dave: (tentatively taking her hand) Of course they did. This is Eric and Calleigh we’re talkin’ about. (squeezes her hand; Eric and Calleigh walk up)
Mackenzie: Cals, did you find anything?
Calleigh: Kenzie, relax.
Mackenzie: But Cals…(Eric steps up and lays his hand on her shoulder)
Eric: Kenzie, we’ll fill you in when we’ve got everything processed. (to Dave) Can you hang out awhile longer? (sees Dave and Mackenzie’s hands)
Dave: Sure. (holds Mackenzie’s hand firmly so she doesn’t bolt) No problem.
Eric: (to Mackenzie) We’ll figure this out, Kenzie. (pause) Something’s not adding up. (motions for Dave and Mackenzie to go in; turns to Calleigh and sees Jacob coming up) Calleigh, either this guy is really cocky, or he’s got a death wish.
Calleigh: (turns and sees Jacob) This is absolutely insane! (confused)
Eric: (starts over to Jacob; Calleigh follows) You!
Jacob: (stopping; scared) I came to turn myself in- They wanted me to kill her! Please tell me I didn’t hurt her!
Calleigh: Who wants her dead? The Black Bishops?
Jacob: Yeah! They want her dead, but I couldn’t do it! I couldn’t kill her! (hysterical) Is she okay? Please tell me I didn’t hit her! (Dave and Mackenzie come out to see the commotion)
Mackenzie: Cals?
Jacob: (looks at her as Eric grabs him and cuffs him) Mackenzie- you’re okay! (pleading) I’m sorry! I was just doing what they told me!
Horatio: (coming over) What’d they tell you?
Jacob: (turning to Horatio as Frank approaches) I swear I’ll tell you everything! They’re going too far this time!
Horatio: (to Frank) Frank, escort this young man to interview, please.
Frank: Sure thing. (grabs Jacob) Nice to see ya again. (takes Jacob to an interview room)
Horatio: (to Eric) I heard about the shooting. Everything okay?
Eric: Yeah, well, our one suspect just turned himself in. (looks at Calleigh with Dave and Mackenzie) Kenzie’s…she’s holdin’ her own, H.
Horatio: I have no doubt about that, Eric. (eyeing Eric) What’d you get from the scene?
Eric: A gun that’s the same caliber as the rounds we found, and a good set of footprints.
Horatio: Why don’t you get that processed? I’m willing to bet that gun has a history.
Eric: You got it. (goes to the others)
In interview- Horatio and Frank with Jacob:
Horatio: Why are the Bishops trying to kill Mackenzie?
Jacob: They don’t want her to have a chance at testifying at the next appeal hearing for the Derek and the others.
Frank: Why are you helping them anyway? We’ve checked your record- you’re not their typical type of recruit.
Jacob: I owed them money. They covered a few of my gambling debts in exchange for my help with things like this. But I swear I never would’ve agreed if I had known they were thinking murder.
Horatio: Who gave the order?
Jacob: (hesitant) His name is Cory. He’s Derek’s cousin.
Horatio: Is he here in Miami?
Jacob: Yeah. I met him at the ferry dock last night. That’s when he gave me the gun and told me to kill her.
Horatio: I’d think you’d want Mackenzie gone, too, considering your history with her.
Jacob: No! I mean, yeah, I was angry- everything came easy for her! But I never wanted to kill her. (pause) I think she deserves all of the good in her life.
Frank: So what are the Bishops gonna do now? I’m pretty sure they know you flaked by now.
Jacob: All I know is that they’ll keep coming until you stop them. (pause) I want to help. It’s the least I can do…and I owe here that much.
Horatio: (quietly) You realize they’ll be coming for you, too.
Jacob: Yeah…but I deserve it. She doesn’t.
Firearms Lab- Eric and Calleigh:
Eric: (bringing in the gun from the crime scene) Hey.
Calleigh: There you are. Did you get prints off of the weapon?
Eric: Yeah. Two sets- Jacob’s and an unknown. But there was only one set on the rounds in the clip- the unknown.
Calleigh: (taking the gun) Now we need to see if the rounds we found at the scene came from this gun. (pauses and gets ready for a test fire) Was Horatio still in interview?
Eric: (watching her) Yeah. I don’t know what they’re getting out of him. (Calleigh looks at him) You don’t think he’s conning us, do you?
Calleigh: I don’t know what to think…(pause) but I do know he looked terrified at the thought that he might’ve killed Kenzie. (pulls on safety gear) Let’s just follow the evidence. (Eric leaves as Calleigh continues test fire, then analysis; on the phone after getting the results) Eric, you are not gonna believe this.
Staff Lounge- Dave and Kenzie waiting for news; Kenzie getting impatient:
Mackenzie: (pacing) What’s taking so long?
Dave: (standing to stop her in her tracks) Mackenzie, stop. (holds her arms) You know they’ll come when they have something to tell you. (pulls her into his arms) Although, I agree with you. I’d rather be working this instead of sitting on the sidelines. (Mackenzie steps back)
Mackenzie: Thanks, Dave. (turning to look out a window) I just wish this were over. (Dave wraps his arms around her)
Eric: (walking in with Calleigh; hearing Mackenzie) It will be if we have anything to do with it.
Mackenzie: (turning with Dave to face them) So?
Calleigh: Jacob’s prints are all over the gun we found at the parking lot, but not on the casings we found or the rounds in the clip
Mackenzie: Which means he didn’t load the weapon. He only fired it.
Eric: All of the spent rounds from the scene were from this gun…(looks at Calleigh)
Calleigh: We also found a set of unidentifiable prints on the gun and the casings. (pause) We’ve also found that this gun was used in another crime a few days ago.
Eric: The prints that were found at that crime scene were a match to the unidentifiable set from this.
Dave: So, now what do we do?
Calleigh: Now, we wait to see what Horatio gets out of Jacob.
Outside of interview- Horatio and Frank still inside with Jacob; Eric, Dave, Calleigh and Kenzie waiting:
Calleigh: (trying to be optimistic) Horatio will get something that will lead us to these guys. (Horatio comes out) Horatio?
Mackenzie: Horatio, what did he say? (Dave stays at her side)
Horatio: (looking at all of them) He’s willing to help us get the leader. (to Mackenzie) Do you know Cory?
Mackenzie: No. Who’s he?
Horatio: He’s apparently the head of the Bishops, and Derek’s cousin. He’s also a founding member of the Black Bishops.
Mackenzie: I never met Derek’s family. I think if I hadn’t found out about him when I did, it may have gotten to that point and I thank God now that it didn’t.
Horatio: Did you ever see him with the same people?
Mackenzie: There were a few people that he always had with him.
Horatio: Could you pick them out?
Mackenzie: (considering) Yeah. (Horatio nods, thinking)
Calleigh: So what’s our next move?
Horatio: We’re cutting Jacob loose, with a wire and GPS transmitter.
Eric: Are we monitoring on the move?
Horatio: Ryan and Natalia are taking care of that.
Calleigh: What do you want us to do?
Horatio: Follow the evidence. Everything by the book- we’re not giving these guys any loopholes to wiggle through.
Mackenzie: Horatio, what can I do? Sitting here and waiting is driving me crazy!
Calleigh: Kenzie…
Mackenzie: I can’t sit here and do nothing!
Horatio: Mackenzie, I need you to stay out of danger so you can ID these people and put them away. (Mackenzie starts to protest until H puts his hand up) You and Dave can help here. I can’t let you work this case- you know that. But there are still pieces of video and audio evidence from other cases.
Mackenzie: Horatio, I…(starts to argue, then stops and thinks) Okay. Anything is better than doing nothing.
Horatio: Okay. (turns to Dave) Dave, I know it’s your day off.
Dave: I’m stayin’. I want to see this through. (earns smiles from Calleigh and Mackenzie) We’ll be in the AV lab. (takes Mackenzie’s hand and leads her out; Calleigh and Eric smile at the image)
Calleigh: Okay. We’ll go back through the evidence, make sure there’s no leaks. (pause) And I’m gonna try IBIS again, see if I can get more history on the gun.
Horatio: Thank you. (Natalia and Ryan walk in from another scene, answering Horatio’s page)
Natalia: What’s happening? I just saw that kid Jacob leaving.
Horatio: He’s helping us bring the Bishops in.
Ryan: He’s wired?
Horatio: Yes.
Natalia: What do you need from us?
Horatio: I want the two of you running surveillance. Frank’s already tailing him. If things are the way Jacob said they’ll be, then the Bishops will be looking for an outlet. Calleigh and Eric can start on your evidence.
Ryan: Okay. We’re on it. (he and Natalia leave)
Horatio: (to Eric and Calleigh) Keep me posted. (Calleigh nods)
Eric running prints from Natalia and Ryan’s case; running another analysis on the mystery prints from the shooting:
Eric: (on the phone; shown split screen with Calleigh) How’s it goin’ in IBIS?
Calleigh: I’m runnin’ Nat’s slugs through IBIS, but I’m still trying to get more on our weapon. (pause) What about you- any luck?
Eric: I just finished running the prints Ryan collected. (pause; thinking) I think I’ll try one more filter through AFIS. (pauses again) We have to find a way to nail these guys.
Calleigh: I know. I’ll talk to you later. (Calleigh hangs up; Eric continues working the prints)
Abandoned warehouse on the dock- Bishop temporary headquarters:
Cory: (to no one in particular) That bastard! I should’ve known better than to trust that sniveling jackass!
Jerome: Dude, maybe he’s waiting out the cops- you saw the tail they had on him yesterday.
Cory: (calming down a little) Maybe…but why hasn’t he shown his face?
Jerome: You told him not to come here until it was done.
Cory: When has that ever stopped him? He…(stops as a side door opens and Jacob walks in) Speak of the devil! Jake, what’s goin’ on?
Jacob: (shaking) I need another gun. I dropped the other one when I heard the sirens.
Cory: (getting upset again) You left it there?
Jacob: I don’t think they’ve tied it to me. They would’ve pulled me in again by now. And I don’t know how the cops got there so fast!
Cory: Okay. So what’s your plan now?
Jacob: I overheard her talkin’ about some class. She should be back on campus tonight. I’ll get her then.
Cory: Good idea. There’s more cover after sunset. This time Jerome goes with you. (Jerome nods)
Jacob: Okay. (hesitant) Whatever you say, Cory.
Cory: (turns to a laptop and starts typing) Now beat it.
Surveillance; Nat and Ryan in the Hummer; Frank in an unmarked cruiser:
Frank: (on radio with Horatio; Natalia and Ryan listening in) You heard all of that, right?
Horatio: Yes. Ryan?
Ryan: H, according to Calleigh, Mackenzie doesn’t have class tonight.
Natalia: But Dave does. (confused) What is this guy pullin’?
Horatio: Frank, can you stay on him without being made?
Frank: Sure, but what are we gonna do?
Horatio: I think…our young friend is trying to give us an opening. Mr. Wolfe, I want you and Ms. Boa Vista at Dade University. Wait there.
Ryan: Okay, H. (starts the Hummer and heads out)
Horatio: (on the phone as he runs back to into the lab from his Hummer) Eric, meet me in the AV lab. Bring Calleigh. I think we have our next move.
Eric: (split screen) Okay. (hangs up as he walks into firearms) Hey.
Calleigh: (turning) What’s up?
Eric: H has an idea. We gotta get to AV.
Calleigh: Okay. (finishes locking up evidence, then walks with Eric to AV; to Mackenzie and Dave) Hey guys.
Mackenzie: (turning from the screen) Hey. (confused) What’s going on? (Horatio walks in)
Horatio: Jacob told Cory that he’d get Mackenzie tonight after a class. (looks around) Here’s the plan…
Dade University, Calleigh and Nat watching the parking lot from the Hummer; Jacob pulls in with Jerome:
Jerome: Where is she, Jake?
Jacob: She’s inside. The class started at 7.
Jerome: How do you know?
Jacob: Because she’d never miss a class. Remember? I went to school with her.
Jerome: She better be here, or Cory’s gonna kill you.
Jacob: (shuddering with realization at this statement) I know.
Jerome: (hands Jacob a .45) Here ya go. (sees Mackenzie walking, apparently alone) There she is. Get it over with.
Jacob: (getting out of the car) I’ll be right back. (cocks gun and walks toward Mackenzie; into the wire) If you cops are out there, now would be a good time to show yourselves.
Horatio: (to Eric and Ryan, who are hiding- Eric in the bushes near Mackenzie, Ryan behind Jacob’s car) He’s coming. Get ready.
Eric: Copy, H.
Horatio: (to Calleigh and Natalia in the Hummer) Where’s Mackenzie?
Calleigh: She’s 20 feet from Eric. Where’s Ryan?
Ryan: (over radio) I’m behind Jacob’s car. (looks in and sees BB2) Cory made good. The other guy’s still in the car, waiting for Jacob.
Jacob: (to Mackenzie, who freezes 10 feet from him) You thought you had me, huh? (waves the gun) Thought I wouldn’t try again? (quietly into the wire) Please tell her I’m sorry for everything I’ve done. (louder so BB2 can hear on the far side of the parking lot) Come on, b****! You got nothing to say?!
Calleigh: (over radio) Eric…
Eric: I’ve got her, Calleigh. H?
Horatio: On my count, Eric, Ryan. (pause) Go! (Ryan pops up by the car, Eric comes out of the shadows nearest Jacob)
Eric: Drop it! Get on the ground! (Jacob drops the gun and gets down; Eric comes over and frisks him, then quietly) We’ve gotta get this wire off of you. (takes the wire and cuffs Jacob)
Ryan: (at the passenger window of Jacob’s car) Hands where I can see ‘em! (Jerome puts his hands out the window; Ryan opens the door) Get out! On the ground!
Eric: Kenzie, get to the Hummer. (bends down to pull Jacob up) You’re under arrest. (drags Jacob to his feet as Mackenzie reaches the Hummer) H, we clear?
Horatio: Hang on, Eric. (to Ryan as he cuffs Jerome) Mr. Wolfe?
Ryan: Clear! (dragging Jerome over to the squad car that just pulled in) Where’s Mackenzie? (tossing Jerome over to the uniform)
Horatio: She’s with Calleigh and Natalia. Nice work, Ryan. (turns to see Eric bringing Jacob over) Well done, Eric.
Eric: Thanks. (starts to hand Jacob over; sees movement from the side and a glint of metal) Everyone down! (tries to pull Jacob down as shots are fired; Jacob drops with two holes in his chest; Calleigh yelling over the radio; Horatio fires and hits the stray shooter; Ryan runs over to grab him) We need an ambulance NOW! (tries to stop Jacob’s bleeding; Mackenzie and Calleigh run over; Jacob dies)
Mackenzie: Jacob? Jacob! (turns to Calleigh; Ryan brings the shooter, Cory, over and throws him into the squad car with a flesh wound on the arm)
Horatio: (reaching the small group) Eric?
Eric: (looks up at Calleigh, Mackenzie and Horatio) He’s gone. Both rounds center of the chest. (looks down at Jacob and at his own bloody hands) He didn’t have a chance.
Next Day; at the lab, Dave works on reviewing the wire recording; Eric comes into the AV lab:
Eric: Hey Dave. Anything?
Dave: (quietly) I think he knew they’d kill him anyway.
Eric: Do we have enough to nail them?
Dave: I think so. Everything on here is crystal clear. We’ve got the entire conversation planning Mackenzie’s shooting, including names. (pause) He wanted her to know that he was sorry for everything. (looking at Eric) How is she?
Eric: (hesitant, but noticing the feelings raging in Dave) She’s…struggling with the fact that Jacob was helping her when he was killed. She’s blaming herself. (pause) She’s with Calleigh in firearms.
Dave: (quietly) Okay. Would you…never mind.
Eric: Dave, you should tell her how you feel. (Dave looks at Eric) Don’t wait. Tell her.
Dave: (curiously) Speaking from experience?
Eric: (thinks about his close calls with Calleigh) Yeah. And I almost lost my chance.
Dave: You don’t think it’s too soon?
Eric: It doesn’t matter what I think. It’s what you feel.
Dave: (considering) Thanks, Eric.
Eric: (walking out to meet Calleigh and Mackenzie) No problem. (Dave signs off on the recording, signs out for the day; Eric meets Calleigh and Mackenzie in the parking lot)
Calleigh: (turning) Hey. The rounds Alexx got from Jacob match the .45 from our parking structure shooting.
Eric: Our mystery prints were Cory’s, and I found Jerome’s on the casings of the .45.
Calleigh: We’ve got them nailed.
Eric: Yeah, on both cases. (looks at Mackenzie) They’ll be going away for a long time.
Calleigh: The only question I have is why the random shooting at the parking structure?
Eric: It turns out it wasn’t so random. The two vics were rival drug dealers. (pause; offers his arm to Calleigh and slings his arm around Mackenzie’s shoulders) What do you ladies say to getting out of here?
Calleigh: (smiling slightly) Let’s go.
Eric: Where to? (heads for Calleigh’s Hummer)
Dave: (running towards them) Mackenzie! (Mackenzie turns and starts to walk back to Dave)
Eric: (quietly to Calleigh) Maybe it’s just us tonight. (Eric and Calleigh turn to watch Dave take Mackenzie’s hand and talk to her before she steps into his arms)
Calleigh: (nods and smiles) I think it’s just us tonight. (takes his arm again as he leads the way to her Hummer) Shall we? (Eric smiles as he helps her into the Hummer before looking back at Dave and Mackenzie, then gets into the driver’s seat)
