The Story of Katrina Delko Caine Kamerin went for a jog through the park. She was on her way home when her cell phone rang. She stopped and answered it. “Hello?” Kamerin stopped and noticed something. “Um, I’ll call you back.” She said hanging up. She ran over to someone’s front lawn where she saw a little girl lying on the front lawn.

She grabbed her wrist and checked for a pulse. She couldn’t get one. She grabbed her palm to see if it was still warm and if she could be revived. She pulled out her cell phone. “Hey Gabby, it’s me. I need some help.” Kamerin sat by the girl and waited for her sister to show up. When she saw the hummer she just watched as Gabby walked over to her. “What happened?” “I don’t know.” “Well does she have a pulse?” Kamerin shook her head. “Kam, we have to call MDPD.” “Ok. I’ll call them.” Kamerin said pulling out her cell phone and dialing a number. When she got the operator she began to speak. “This is CSI Kamerin Caine. I’m reporting a teenage female victim found dead. Requesting assistance at 701 Brickwell Ave.” She said hanging up.

She was waiting on the grass for Horatio and the team to show up. “Kamerin.” Horatio said taking his sunglasses off. “Yeah?” She said looking up at him. “Are you alright?” “I’m fine.” “Ok,” He said nodding. “Why don’t you tell me what happened?” “Ok, I was going for my morning jog before work and I was on my way home. I was on the phone and I hung up when I saw the girl lying on the grass.” “Ok.” “I ran over and checked for a pulse but she was gone. I checked her hand to see if it was still warm and she could be resuscitated but her hand was ice cold which means she’s been dead for at least twenty four hours.” “Ok.” “H,” Kamerin said standing up. “Yeah?” “What are we going to do?” “We, are going to find who did this.” He said putting his sunglasses back on.

Kamerin was giving Frank a statement while Gabby and Calleigh were checking the crime scene. When Kamerin was done she grabbed her kit from the back of the hummer and went over to help out. Inside was a wreck. Kamerin was appalled at what she found. It looked like a war happened. Chairs were knocked over and hung pictures were on the floor smashed. Kamerin tried to walk over all the broken glass. “Ow!” She said pulling her leg up quickly. She felt a sharp pinch. Gabby walked over. “What happened?” Kamerin turned her foot so that she could see the bottom of her shoe. “I stepped in glass.” She said letting out a big sigh and rolling her eyes. “Well here.” Gabby said setting her kit down and opening it. She looked for a pair of tweezers. When she found them she reached over and pulled the giant glass shard out of Kamerin’s foot. “I’m going to go to Alexx to get this wrapped.” “Ok.” She said nodding. Kamerin hobbled over Alexx. Alexx wrapped her ankle with a gauze roll and then an ace bandage.

When she finished Kamerin slid her shoe back on. She walked over to help her sister and Calleigh. Calleigh walked over and noticed the fabric on the furniture had claw marks in it. She swabbed for DNA then she cut a piece of the fabric. Gabby swabbed some of the blood off of the walls. Kamerin had the camera and took pictures. Kamerin started to walk by the bedroom door. “Hey Gab?” “Yeah?” “I found some footprints over here.” She said taking a picture of it. “I found some fingerprints over here.” Calleigh said lifting them off of the couch. They took the results straight to the lab and ran them. When Kamerin got a name she walked over to Gabby. “Hey did you get any results on the blood?” “Yeah, it’s a mixture.” “Ok, of Hope Thompson and,” “Leo Williams.” “Oh perfect. He’s two for two today. I found his footprint at the crime scene.” “Good then we can get him for something.” “Yep.” She said walking over to interrogation. Kamerin was standing there with her arms folded. Gabby had pulled up a seat and sat down.

“I assume you know why you’re here.” “No I don’t.” “You’re here because we found evidence that ties you to a murder.” Kamerin said leaning against the wall. “What murder?” Gabby opened the file and pulled the picture out of the victim and turned it so he could see it. She folded her hands. “Who’s she?” “Hope Thompson.” Kamerin said walking over to the table. “The little girl that you decided to help murder. Look at her! She was barely fourteen!! She had her whole life ahead of her and you took that from her!!” Leo leaned back in his chair. “I want my lawyer.” He said crossing his arms. Gabby nodded and said, “Officer, get him out of here.” The officer grabbed him by the arm and lifted him out of the chair and walked out of the room with him.

Gabby sat on the table and looked at Kamerin. Kamerin was leaning against the clear glass wall again. Gabby decided to be the first to break the silence. Kamerin was staring at the corner of the room. “Sorry,” Kamerin said folding her arms. “Hey sis, what happened?” “What do you mean?” “I mean about the interrogation. I know that’s its one of your interrogation techniques but you’ve got to calm down when a suspect like this gives you attitude.” “Yeah I know that.” She said making eye contact with her sister. Gabby just stared into Kamerin’s eyes. “Look, Gab, I’m sorry. But she was just fourteen. She had her whole life ahead of her. She should be hanging out with friends. Doing pranks. Worrying about homework and tests for school. Not lying on a slab in the morgue!” “I know how you feel sis; I’ve worked cases like this before. They’re never easy and I’ve felt like you do now before too. But you can’t let it cloud your better judgment. Sis, I gotta tell ya,” “What?” “Next time, don’t let the attitude from the suspect get to you, alright?” “Alright.” She said walking for the door. She was picking at her lip.

Before Kamerin could open the door she felt Gabby grab her by her wrist. “Kam, I know you, you normally separate your emotions from work. You don’t come on this strong, what’s wrong?” “I can’t stop thinking about Katrina.” “Aunt Marina’s daughter?” “Yeah. I keep thinking that I did something to make her run away.” “Now Kam, we didn’t know she was going to run away. She showed no signs of unhappiness.” “I know but now she’s out there running around with no one to protect her.” She stopped. She took a deep breathe. “I’m just so afraid one day I’m going to find her in the morgue.” “We can’t think like that Kam.” “I know but I can’t help it.” “Alright, we’ll talk more at home.” Kamerin said walking out. She was walking to her lab when Horatio stopped her.

“Hey,” “Hi.” “Are you ok?” “Yeah, I’m fine why?” “Kamerin,” “What?” “What’s wrong? I can’t help you unless you tell me.” “I’m scared.” “About what?” His face turned to worry. “I’m afraid that one day I’m going to wake up and find Katrina on a slab in the morgue.” “Kamerin you can’t think like that.” “I know but it doesn’t mean I can help it. You have to admit our family isn’t the luckiest.” Horatio just stopped and took in everything Kamerin said. Kamerin didn’t like the silence it was like a weird ringing in her ear. “Well if that’s all I’m going to get back to work. I have a killer to catch.” She said walking away.

That night Kamerin heard a noise. She turned her head to her night stand and looked at her clock. It was 3:00 in the morning. She got up and grabbed her gun. She heard a bang. She walked down the hallway with her gun drawn. She walked over to the spare room and opened the sliding doors and walked out onto the balcony. There was on her balcony was a person standing on the balcony, soaking wet. That’s when Kamerin realized that it was raining. She put her gun down. “You came back.” She said as the wind started to whip her hair around. “I need your help. I’m being followed.” “By who?” Kamerin said calmly. “I don’t know. I need you to find that out.” “Alright, come with me.” She said walking in. She grabbed her coat and threw it on. She grabbed another and tossed it at her. “Put that on.” “Why?” “We’re going for a walk.” Kamerin was walking down the street with the girl right on her tail.

They stopped when they hit a brown door with an oval shaped window. Kamerin started to knock on it. She waited as a light turned on and the door opened. “Kam?” Ryan said through squinted eyes. “I need to talk to Gabby.” He stepped back allowing her to walk in. She walked straight up to Gabby’s room. She walked in and turned the light on. “Turn it off Kamerin!!” She said putting the pillow over her head. “Get up, we need to talk.” Gabby squinted her eyes at the clock. “It’s 3 am! Are you crazy?” “No, now get up.” Kamerin said walking out the bedroom door. Gabby threw her coat on and started to walk with Kamerin. Kamerin dropped the girl off at her friend Aiden’s. “Who was the girl?” “Katrina.” Gabby looked shocked. “Why did she come back?” “Someone’s following her.” She said putting her hands in her pockets. Kamerin was staring at the sidewalk as she was walking. She only picked her head up once or twice to make eye contact with her sister.

They were walking home when they heard gunshots. Kamerin quick turned around and saw a dark figure holding a gun. “What the hell?” She said squinting her eyes trying to see who it was. The bullets were whizzing passed them. Gabby started to run and Kamerin followed. “What do we do?” Kamerin asked keeping time with her sister. “Do you have your gun?” “No.” “Then keep running!!” She said running faster. They ran to Aiden’s house. They ran in and Kamerin slammed the door. She was leaning against it trying to catch her breath. Aiden stood up.

“Are you girls ok?” “Yeah I think so.” Kamerin said trying to relax. She turned her head and looked out the window to see if the dark figure was standing outside. When she saw it was clear she opened the door. She looked around outside and heard a gunshot. She was lying on the floor watching Gabby starting to freak out. Gabby pulled out her cell phone and called for help. Kamerin picked her head up and saw she was shot in the shoulder. She tried to stay awake but everything was going black. She tried as hard as she could to keep her eyes open but she couldn’t. The last thing she saw was a dark figure walking over to pick her up. Horatio ran to the hospital as fast as he could.

Kyle and Eric were already there with Gabby who had her head on Ryan’s shoulder and started to sob. Horatio ran to Gabby. “What happened?” “She was shot in the shoulder. The bullet is lodged in her bone and they are trying to remove it now.” “Ok did you see by whom?” “No, it was too dark.” Gabby said wiping her tears away. “Ok, where is she now?” “Surgery, getting the bullet removed.” Horatio just walked down the hall. Aiden was walking around when she noticed someone standing up in the observation area in the operating room. “She’s going to be ok, she’s strong Horatio.” He turned and saw Aiden’s hand on his shoulder. All he could think about was the day Tim Speedle got shot and died and he could only think that the same thing might happen to Kamerin.

Gabby was sitting by her sister’s side. She felt so bad that she didn’t see it coming. She should’ve suspected it. She had learned from experience that shooters will stop at nothing to get their target. Gabby was thinking about her mother as she looked around the room. The sound of the heart monitor reminded her the day of her death. Gabby had seen Marisol a half hour before she passed. Gabby couldn’t stand to think that Kamerin would end up that way. Gabby grabbed Kam’s hand and started to talk to her. “Hey Sis, It’s me Gabby. I gotta say that was a close one.” She said giving a sigh. “Next time I promise to have my gun with me no matter what.” Ryan opens the door and begins to speak. “Hey Gabby?” Gabby turns around to face Ryan. “Yeah Ryan?” “We gotta get back to work.” “Right,” She letting a sigh out. “You’re right. I want to find out who did this.” Ryan looks at Gabby and Gabby turned back to Kam. “I’ll be right out Ryan. Wait for me outside. Ok?” “Ok.” Ryan said nodding and leaving. “Kam, I’m going to find who did this. I promise.” Gabby stood up and leaned over and gave Kamerin a kiss on the cheek and left.

Gabby was at the lab going through the evidence from the shooting. Meanwhile, the elevator dings and the doors open. Don Flack steps out and looks around. He spots Gabby in the lockout room. “Hey Gabby. How are you doing?” Gabby was writing her findings down on paper. She finished her sentence and looked up. “Oh! Hey Flack. What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be in New York?” “Yeah,” He said smiling. “I remember when you and your dad came to solve a case.” “Oh right, right. I remember too. I remember that it was very cold when we went there. How’s Mac?” “He’s good thanks for asking.” “Say hello to him, will ya?” “I will. I decided to take some time off. Take a little vacation. So I decided to come here to Miami to get a little bit of a tan.” “So do you need anything?” “Um, yeah. How’s Kam?” Gabby wrote down a little more and then looked back up at Flack. Gabby let out a sigh and set her pen down. “She was shot in the arm, but she was lucky. She’s going to be fine.” “Oh thank god. I felt so bad that I didn’t get to visit her. Aiden told me about Kam and I started to worry.” “Well there’s nothing to worry about. She’s going to be fine. You can relax.” “Hey Gab, can I ask you a question?” “Sure.” She said writing again.

“Who’s Katrina?” “She’s our cousin.” She said without looking up. “Ok? I’m lost then what’s the whole story, I mean if you don’t mind me asking.” “No it’s quite alright. Katrina’s mother Marina, Eric’s sister and our aunt, was killed in a car accident. She was driving down on the highway and a big rig spun out of control and slammed her car into a tree, killing her instantly.” Gabby stopped writing and looked up at Don. “Oh, I’m sorry.” “It’s alright. Well Katrina was supposed to go to Eric but he had a lot going on and relinquished his position. Which left Marisol, Marisol took her in a heart beat. And everything was going perfectly fine until Marisol got cancer.” “I’m sorry to hear that.” “It’s fine she fought it and won, but while she was sick Kam and I took over. We took temporary custody of her but Kat ran away the day my mother was gunned down by the Mala Noche and we haven’t heard from her since. Well until now that is.” “Oh well I’m here for you guys if you need me. I’m going to visit Kam.” He said turning for the door. “Alright, give her my regards.” “Ok will do. And Gabby,” He said stopping and turning his head. She had gone back to her writing. She picked her head up quick. “Yeah Don?” “Hang in there.” Gabby gave him a light, gentle smile and nodded. Don left and walked towards the elevator.

When Don got to the hospital Kamerin was still unconscious. He sat down by her and began to talk. “Hey Kam, it’s me Don. I came to see you. I remember the day you left. You left me that letter telling me who you actually felt. I never knew you felt that way.” He grabbed her hand. “I wish you would’ve told me sooner. Kam,” He said, his voice getting serious. “I’ve always liked you, more then a friend. I was just scared you didn’t feel the same way and I didn’t want to tell you and not have you feel the same way and in turn jeopardizing or friendship. Kam you mean everything to me. I’d do anything for you.” He thought for a bit. “I love you.” He said gently. He just sat there and thought some more. On one level he wanted her to hear him but on another he didn’t because what if her feelings had changed for him? The nurse was making her rounds. “Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt.” “No it’s ok. I have to go anyways. I was just stopping by to say hi.” “Oh, well you can stop by anytime.” “Thank you.” He said walking towards the door and he left.

Ryan walked in to check on Gabby. “Hey, how ya holding up?” “I don’t know right now. Kat’s safe but I can’t help but worry about Kamerin. I know she’s strong but what if something goes wrong? Ryan,” She said as tears came to her eyes. “I can’t lose my sister.” Ryan walked over and gave her a hug. “I know. And you’re not going to. Kam’s a fighter and she’s going to come through.” Gabby wiped away her tears. “You’re right. Oh God I hope so.” She said thinking about her sister. Ryan gave Gabby a big hug. “I really hope she’s ok. Ryan!” “Me too Gabby.” “Well I have to get going; I told Calleigh I’d meet her in the gun lab.” “Ok. Bye.” Ryan left with her. “Oh. Did they get the bullet yet?” “Why the hell do you think I’m going to the gun lab?!?!” “Ok, sorry.” “It’s Ok.” she said as she walked out.

“Hey Calleigh!” “Oh hey sweet pea what’s up?” “I just want to catch this guy and put him in jail.” “Well sweetie pie you came to the right place.” She said with a smile on her face. “I found out who the gun belongs to.” “Really who?” “Rodney Harsco.” “Well let’s get him.” She said walking out. “Mr. Harsco, do you know why you’re here?” “No, I try to help people. Not kill them.” He said leaning back in his chair. “Well it looks like you’ve upgraded from your robbery in 2002 to shooting police officers.” “What? You have no proof of that.” Gabby pulled out a picture and turned it so he could see. “What’s that?” “Well that, is the picture of the bullet that you put in my sister’s arm!” The guy just smiled. “Are you happy about that?!?!” Gabby screamed while getting in his face. “Gabby.” Calleigh said in a soft tone pulling her back. “Mr. Harsco you’re under arrest for the shooting a CSI. Take him.” Calleigh said nodding to the officer.” “Ha! You’ve got nothing on me!” He said smiling. “Why, you son of a…” “Gabby.” Calleigh said grabbing her by her arms and holding her back. Gabby was struggling. “Gabby, Gabby calm down!!” Gabby shook her off. “Sorry, it’s just that man gets under my skin.” “Well maybe that’s what happened with Kam and Leo.” Gabby thought for a minute.

Katrina ran in the CSI lab screaming. “She’s up! She’s up!!” She said running to Eric and Horatio. “What?” “Kam’s up!!” Horatio’s phone rang. “Horatio. Oh hi doctor. Ok, thank you.” “Well.” Eric said getting excited. “She’s awake.” “I told you!!” Katrina said jumping up and down. Eric laughed. She looked like a kangaroo. Kamerin woke up and say Eric and everyone else in the room with her. She sat herself up. Katrina crawled up on the bed and sat next to Kamerin. Eric gave Kamerin a kiss on the forehead. “I’m glad you’re ok.” Kamerin just smiled. “So did you get the man who did it?” She said looking at Gabby. “I promised you I would didn’t I?” Gabby said smiling at her sister gently. “That you did.” Kamerin said smiling. The nurse came in with the doctor. “Well, we’ve checked your x-rays. Your bone will have that hole in it forever but it won’t stop you from moving it. A few weeks in physical therapy and you should be fine.” He said looking at her charts. “Great!” Kamerin said smiling. “Well your clothes are over there on the chair if you want to change into them.” “Alright. Thank you.” And the doctor left. “Ok, now everyone get out.” She said laughing. They all gave a quick chuckle and left.

When Kamerin was done she walked out of her room where Gabby, Ryan, Katrina, Don, Eric, and Horatio were waiting for her. “Are you ready?” Horatio asked her giving her a light smile. “Yeah.” Kamerin said smiling back. The day she thought she would hate forever was actually the day that she loved the most. Her family was back together again and that’s how she wanted it to be. She grabbed Don’s hand and walked down the hallway with everyone by her side. She turned to face him and smiled. He just smiled back. Kamerin knew that it just goes to show when one story ends another one begins and that’s what was happening here as they walked out into the sunset. The story of her and her broken family had ended and now a new one with her mended family was beginning. For once she was happy to be looking ahead instead of looking back. As they were all walking out hand in hand and arm in arm Kam couldn’t help but think, “What was tomorrow going to be like?” But whatever it may bring she was ready for it and she knew that her family would be there for her one hundred percent.
